Internet is open network. Your computer too may be sent for repair or discarded. IT and network technicians could have easy access to your unencrypted data. If you are sending or storing private information (personal data, photos, videos etc) you must encrypt them. Ie make a zip file (folder) and place all confidential data in it and then encrypt it. What you consider not confidential today may become sensitive material later! This software is ‘open source’. No known Back-doors exist. You must remember the password (and the optional key-file) used to encrypt the file. There is no way you can re-open the file without it.
